A section aiming to discover and introduce queer films newly produced in Korea.

The section “The Competition of Korean Short Films” is newly featured in 2019 SIPFF, in order to discover rising queer film directors and to improve the competence of Korean queer films. Through such step, SIPFF encourages and supports the idea that social discourse of LGBT will be constantly created and discussed in Korean society. Short films (less than 30 minutes) produced after January 1st, 2019 can apply for “The Competition of Korean Short Films” and the winner gets 2 million KRW. Many of the nominated films, including “Knowingly Unknown (directed by Jin-young Lee) are taken from the viewpoint of the parents of sexual minorities rather than the viewpoint of LGBT people. Furthermore, fewer films talk about somewhat traditional topics of coming out and love-friendship; rather, films with diverse topic, such as religious suppression as in “Conversion Therapy (directed by Chan-woo Kim), and family stories of LGBT members as in “Mother-in-Law (directed by Seung-eun Shin” are nominated.
