The Five Films for Freedom short film collection at the 15th Seoul International PRIDE Film Festival presents a selection from the BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival, the world’s first online LGBTIQ+ film festival. Featuring dramas, documentaries, and animations from around the world, the program showcases diverse stories of love, courage, secrecy, and betrayal—each reminding us of the universal need for love and self-expression, regardless of who or where we are.
n Dragfox, Lisa OTT(Director) and Owen THOMAS(Producer) present a warm stop-motion animation that celebrates identity, acceptance, and the magic of becoming oneself. If I Make It to the Morning, Andre SHUN(Director) from Shanghai, China, explores multicultural queer experiences through a unique balance of wit and melancholy. Ramon TE WAKE(Director)’s WAIT, WAIT, NOW!! is a bold and heartfelt film about identity, queerness, and the spaces where we feel safe. From Indonesia, NGGGAK!!!, co-directed by Oktania HAMDANI(Director) and Winner WIJAYA(Director), tells a digital-age love story between Sekar and Baby while amplifying queer voices in Southeast Asia. Meanwhile, We’ll Go Down in History by Cameron RICHARDS(Director) and Charlie TIDMAS(Director) follows the United Kingdom’s first transgender football team, founded around 2021, capturing two years of joy, hardship, and the strength of community in an inspiring short documentary.
The Five Films for Freedom program continues the long-standing partnership between the Seoul International PRIDE Film Festival, the British Council in Korea, and BFI Flare: London LGBTIQ+ Film Festival. Their collaboration began in 2017 to commemorate the UK–Korea Year of Creative Futures 2017–18 and the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in the UK through the “UK Focus” program.
In 2000, Brian ROBINSON(Programmer) joined BFI Flare as the Senior Programmer for the London LGBT Film Festival, and his visit to Korea further strengthened the institutions’ shared commitment to ongoing collaboration. Building on this relationship, the three organizations established the BFI Flare in Seoul PRIDE with the British Council program—reaffirming their joint mission to challenge prejudice, promote inclusion, and foster equality for LGBTIQ+ communities worldwide.
