Introducing the Asia PRIDE Section
: A section where Asian films provide an opportunity for us to introduce new directors and to recheck our current location.
The Asia PRIDE Section selects films from Asian countries that demonstrate high levels of artistry and sophistication not only as a means of showing the lives of sexual minorities living in Asia but to also provide consistent appreciation for promising new directors.
The Asia PRIDE Section will screen Kataomoi Spiral by Keinosuke Hara, director of another Japanese queer film, Ogawachô Serenade. Spiral successfully demonstrates the directorial style and overall atmosphere characteristic of Keinosuke Hara’s movies. K-pop group Kara’s former member, Jiyoung Kang is the main actress in this film where she plays a transgender man.
Director Lucky Kuswandi’s The Fox Exploits the Tiger's Might was nominated for the Cannes Queer Palm and was selected as the best piece of 2016 by the Asia Pacific Queer Film Festival Alliance (APQFFA). The film depicts the subtle clash of power and sexuality between two preteen boys entering puberty: David, son of a colonel and Aseng, son of a merchant family that sells illegal alcohol and tobacco products.
The long wait for an Indian film at the SPFF is answered by Sudhanshu Saria’s Loev, featuring Bollywood star Shiv Pandit as the main actress. Loev is a story of Jai and Sahil, who, despite differing careers and backgrounds, have remained good friends for a long time. We follow them on a weekend trip that unfolds into an easily approachable and cinematically beautiful queer Indian movie.
Other films featured in the Asia PRIDE Section are When Mom Visits, a story about the conflict between a mother that holds Confucian values and her lesbian daughter who is approaching her “marriageable age,” and Soul Mates, a Burmese documentary about two women who live together as they raise a nephew in the Buddhist nation of Myanmar.
