The section that selects the queer films of specific theme, including directors, actors, nationalities, eras, etc., and introduce them in the form of special or retrospective exhibiting sections
Programmer’s recommendations : Road Movie, Made On The Rooftop, Bungee jumping of their own, A Boy and Sungreen, Three Friends, Starting Point
SIPFF introduces the queer films of diverse themes, including directors, actors, nationalities, eras, etc., in the form of special or retrospective exhibiting sections. In 2019, SIPFF published The History of Korean Queer Films, and screened significant queer films of each era; in 2020, it published The History of Korean Transgender Films and provided opportunities of contemplating the stereotypical images of transgendered people in Korean queer films; in 2021, SIPFF published The History of Korean Lesbian Films, and screened the films introduced in the book.
2022 Special Pride Section will screen the films from The History of Korean Gay Films. The most worthy watching film is Starting Point (directed by Soo-yong Kim), the first Korean gay film. Kim also directed The Seashore Village, the first Korean lesbian film, and has left significant footprint in Korean film history by creating diverse great films. Three Friends, the first film by Director Soon-rye Yim will also be screened in 2022 Special Pride Section. It is a really special opportunity to meet the early works of Director Soon-rye Yim and appreciate how her unique color started to blossom. Bungee jumping of their own and Road Movie are the films audiences can revisit the limitations of the era when homophobia was prevalent throughout the society. On the other hand, A Boy and Sungreen (directed by Ju-young Ahn) and Made On The Rooftop (directed by Gwang-soo Kim-Jho) are evaluated as the works that present the path where future Korean gay films should walk onto. More details can be found in The History of Korean Gay Films.
The exhibition and discussions open during 2022 SIPFF will provide more detailed information of the time and cultural backgrounds of the films screened in Special Pride Section. The exhibition that presents information about the films and producing processes of the works introduced in The History of Korean Gay Films will be held on the 4th floor of the theater. Additionally, the publication party for The History of Korean Gay Films will be held in Pride Expo, where you can have greater access to more in depth commentaries on the films screened in 2022 Special Pride Section.
SIPFF restores and screens two film movies into DCP with Korean Film Archive in the beginning of each year. Starting Point and Mud flat (directed by Man Lee) are the ones restored this year. To comprehend these films more in detail, there will be the talk with audiences after screening Starting Point, and a commentary before screening Mud flat.
As such, the attempt of Special Pride Section, which has enhanced every year, not only provides changes for re-examining Korean queer films from diverse perspectives, but also helps people involve in meaningful social movements in real life.
